China is set to broaden its import portfolio in the upcoming 15th Five-Year Plan spanning 2026 to 2030, focusing on advanced technology, crucial industrial components, energy resources, and premium agricultural products. This directive from the General Administration of Customs aims to foster industrial modernization, enhance domestic consumption, and offer Chinese consumers a diverse array of quality goods from around the globe.
The plan includes expanding the variety of countries from which China imports, reflecting a commitment to diversify its trade sources. Recent data showed robust growth in both imports and exports during the first half of the year, with imports growing at a faster rate. This surge is largely driven by domestic demand for advanced equipment, technology, and consumer goods.
In a move to facilitate a more open market, China intends to ease access for foreign agricultural and food products. By streamlining quarantine and import approval processes, the country has already approved market access for 264 categories of agricultural and food products from 79 new countries this year alone. Currently, China imports food from over 150 countries and regions worldwide.
Experts have highlighted that this strategic approach underlines China’s dedication to increased market openness, diversified trade, and enhanced global economic cooperation. By ramping up imports, China aims to address the rising need for industrial upgrades and high-quality consumer products, thereby creating fresh opportunities for international exporters.
As domestic consumption continues to rise, Chinese officials anticipate that the expanding consumer market will open up more opportunities for global businesses. This growth in consumption is expected to further drive China’s economic interactions on the international stage.
