Belize PM Condemns China’s Sanctions, Reaffirms Support for Taiwan

by admin477351

Belizean Prime Minister John Briceño has criticized China’s recent sanctions against Belize’s Foreign Affairs Minister Francis Fonseca, labeling them as unjustified and illegal. These sanctions come after Fonseca attended an event in Taipei with Paraguayan Minister of Information and Communication Technologies Gustavo Villate, celebrating Taiwan’s Double Ten National Day. As a result, both officials face restrictions, including asset freezes in China, bans on business dealings with Chinese entities, and travel prohibitions to mainland China, Hong Kong, and Macau.

Speaking at the International Monetary Fund and World Bank meetings in Bangkok, Briceño underscored Belize’s determination to uphold its diplomatic relationship with Taiwan, despite pressures from China. He emphasized Belize’s sovereignty in making independent foreign policy decisions and reiterated the country’s commitment to supporting Taiwan.

The sanctions reflect ongoing diplomatic tensions surrounding Taiwan’s international status. China views Taiwan as part of its territory and opposes any formal international engagements with the island. However, Belize, along with a handful of other nations, continues to maintain diplomatic ties with Taiwan, standing firm against China’s pressures.

Briceño’s remarks highlight the challenges faced by countries that choose to support Taiwan amidst international pressure. The prime minister’s statements also underscore a broader geopolitical struggle over Taiwan’s recognition and the complexities of international diplomacy in the region.
