Saint Lucia PM Philip J Pierre Visits Taiwan to Boost Bilateral Ties

by admin477351

Saint Lucia Prime Minister Philip J Pierre has embarked on a significant diplomatic mission to Taiwan, marking his fourth visit since assuming office in 2021. The five-day state visit aims to bolster bilateral relations and explore cooperative opportunities between the two nations.

During his stay, Prime Minister Pierre is scheduled to engage in high-level discussions with Taiwan President William Lai Ching-te and other senior officials. These talks are expected to focus on shared interests and potential areas for future collaboration. In honor of his visit, President Lai will host a military honors ceremony, while Taiwan’s Foreign Minister Lin Chia-lung will organize a formal banquet for the delegation.

The Saint Lucian delegation accompanying Prime Minister Pierre includes Attorney General Leslie Mondesir, Senator Allison A Jean, and Saint Lucia Development Bank Chairman Daryl Raymond. The group plans to visit significant sites such as Cathay General Hospital, Taipei 101, and the Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company Museum of Innovation in Hsinchu.

Diplomatic relations between Saint Lucia and Taiwan were initially established in 1984, but were severed in 1997 when Saint Lucia shifted its diplomatic recognition to Beijing. Relations were restored in April 2007, making Saint Lucia one of the few countries that officially maintain diplomatic ties with Taiwan rather than the People’s Republic of China.

The visit underscores the ongoing engagement and commitment to strengthening diplomatic ties between Saint Lucia and Taiwan. It presents an opportunity for both nations to enhance their collaboration and explore new avenues of cooperation in areas of mutual interest.
