In a significant move to address climate change, Taiwan President Lai Ching-te presided over the National Climate Change Committee’s eighth meeting, unveiling a strategic plan focusing on three main areas: enhancing social initiatives, ensuring energy reliability, and safeguarding Taiwan’s environmental health. Lai underscored the government’s commitment to improving food security, achieving energy self-sufficiency, and bolstering disaster prevention and public health measures in response to the escalating complexity and frequency of climate risks. He advocated for integrating climate governance into everyday life, encouraging local community involvement beyond mere governmental policies.
To foster public engagement, the government is rolling out a nationwide urban forest program. This initiative includes the formation of a National Urban Forest Promotion Committee and the scheduling of 50 local forums aimed at gathering public feedback. These efforts will contribute to the formulation of a comprehensive national urban forest strategy expected to be finalized within this year.
Highlighting Taiwan’s advancements in renewable energy, Lai pointed to the country’s achievements in offshore wind power development. With 508 offshore wind turbines currently operational, generating a total capacity of 4.9 gigawatts, Taiwan has positioned itself among the top global players in the offshore wind market. Going forward, the government plans to focus on further expanding renewable energy sources, strengthening the national power grid, enhancing energy storage solutions, and developing local supply chains while maintaining environmental sustainability.
Lai also emphasized the critical role of protecting natural resources such as forests, farmland, rivers, wetlands, coastlines, and marine ecosystems. These efforts aim to build resilience against threats like extreme weather, flooding, sea level rises, and disruptions in agriculture. He noted that climate adaptation strategies will be integrated into land-use planning and agricultural policies, aligning Taiwan’s climate initiatives with international environmental standards.
The meeting featured presentations from various governmental bodies, including the Ministry of Environment, Ministry of Agriculture, Ocean Affairs Council, and Ministry of Economic Affairs. These presentations covered topics such as environmental education, sustainable agriculture, ecosystem conservation, and Taiwan’s long-term strategy for offshore wind development.
