President William Lai has announced Taiwan’s ambition to elevate its influence in sustainable development across the Asia-Pacific region by harnessing its expertise in science, technology, manufacturing, and innovation. Speaking at the Asia-Pacific Forum & Exposition for Sustainability in Taipei, Lai underscored the pivotal role these sectors will play in Taiwan’s future sustainability efforts.
The forum, which draws participation from businesses and organizations throughout Asia, is centered on crucial themes such as clean energy, circular design, green finance, and low-carbon living. During his address, Lai emphasized resilience, innovation, and shared prosperity as the core elements of Taiwan’s sustainable development strategy. The government is actively working to enhance urban resilience, bolster energy security, and expand renewable energy sources while improving power grid and energy storage capabilities.
In line with these objectives, Taiwan is advancing a comprehensive carbon reduction plan, which is supported by both technological and financial measures. A significant step in this direction has been the initiation of carbon fee collections aimed at facilitating emissions reduction. To further aid businesses in their transition to digital and net-zero operations, the government is set to establish a NT$100 billion fund over the next eight years. This initiative is complemented by additional support for micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises through a diversified development program.
Leveraging its strengths in semiconductors, information technology, and precision manufacturing, Taiwan is poised to foster sustainable growth and contribute to global sustainability initiatives. By integrating these sectors into its broader strategy, Taiwan aims to set a benchmark for sustainable practices and drive collective efforts in the region towards a more sustainable future.
