Taiwan Enhances Liver Health Using Advanced Hepatitis B Detection Technology

Taiwan is intensifying its public health initiatives to combat hepatitis B and enhance early liver cancer detection, following its early accomplishment of the World Health Organization’s hepatitis C elimination targets. This marks a significant stride in the nation’s healthcare efforts.

Health and Welfare Minister Shih Chung-liang has announced that Taiwan’s next public health strategy will prioritize reducing hepatitis B infections, bolstering liver cancer screenings, and addressing non-viral liver diseases, such as obesity-related fatty liver disease. With liver cancer being the second-leading cause of cancer-related deaths in the country, claiming over 7,000 lives annually, these efforts are crucial. Currently, approximately 40 percent of liver cancer cases are diagnosed at advanced stages, which significantly diminishes treatment effectiveness and escalates healthcare costs.

In response to these challenges, Taiwan’s health authorities are formulating a comprehensive national cancer control program. This program will feature a liver cancer risk assessment model specifically designed for Taiwan’s population, aiming to improve early detection rates. Additionally, the initiative will focus on the increasing health concern of non-viral liver cancer.

To further support these endeavors, the Good Liver Foundation has collaborated with experts in medicine and technology to create “iGood Liver AI,” an innovative artificial intelligence-powered ultrasound tool. This technology is designed to identify and analyze liver tumors in real-time, highlighting suspicious areas and assisting in distinguishing between benign and malignant growths during routine checks. While this tool aims to enhance diagnostic accuracy, it is intended to complement, not replace, the role of medical professionals.

Moreover, to broaden healthcare accessibility, the Good Liver Foundation has secured funding to distribute 50 units of the AI system to medical facilities in remote and underserved regions. This initiative will help expand liver disease screening and early intervention services throughout Taiwan, ensuring that more individuals have access to necessary healthcare resources.
