The United States has unveiled a new set of tariffs, reaching up to 100%, on certain drone imports and components, citing national security concerns and the need to lessen reliance on foreign supply chains, particularly those dominated by China. The policy is specifically aimed at unmanned aircraft systems, with larger drones—those over 25 kilograms—and those equipped with critical capabilities such as thermal cameras and docking stations, facing the highest tariff. Smaller drones will see a 25% tariff imposed.
In addition to targeting Chinese imports, the US will also levy tariffs on drone products from key trading partners. Drones and components from the European Union, Japan, Liechtenstein, South Korea, Switzerland, and Taiwan will incur a 15% tariff, while those from the United Kingdom will be subject to a 10% tariff, provided the technology originates from these nations or the US. The majority of these tariffs are set to be implemented on September 3.
The White House has stated that these measures are part of a broader strategy to bolster the US defense and industrial base, stimulate domestic drone production, and generate American jobs, thereby decreasing dependency on international suppliers. This move comes as Shenzhen-based DJI, a major player in the global drone market and a significant presence in the US commercial sector, continues to face US scrutiny over national security issues.
US officials have raised concerns about the potential risks posed by foreign-made drones, including surveillance, sensitive data collection, and possible attacks. In line with these concerns, the US Federal Communications Commission has previously advocated for increased domestic manufacturing to mitigate such threats.
This development occurs against a backdrop of ongoing trade and technology tensions between the US and China. In a parallel move, China has also placed restrictions on drone exports to the US and has taken actions against several American companies.
