China celebrated a significant milestone at the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games by clinching the bronze medal in men’s football, ending a 28-year medal drought in the sport. The team triumphed over Uzbekistan with a dramatic 4-3 victory on penalties after the match ended in a 2-2 draw.

Goalkeeper Li Hao emerged as the hero during the penalty shootout, saving two critical shots to secure China’s victory. This achievement marks China’s fourth medal in men’s football at the Asian Games, having previously won bronze in 1978 and 1998, and silver in 1994.

The match began with China taking an early lead in the 15th minute when Hu Hetao, after a neat exchange with Kuai Jiwen, confidently finished the move. However, Uzbekistan equalized just before halftime, courtesy of Sardorbek Bakhromov’s well-executed attack in the 42nd minute.

China regained the advantage in the second half when Wang Yudong, positioned near the penalty area, cut inside and delivered a powerful strike into the top corner. Despite Zhang Yuning hitting the post, Uzbekistan’s persistence paid off as Shodiyor Shodiboyev scored an equalizer in the 89th minute, following an initial save by Li Hao.

Without extra time in the bronze-medal match, the contest went straight to penalties, where Li Hao’s two crucial saves ensured China’s spot on the podium. This victory provides a sense of redemption for the team after their semifinal defeat to South Korea, reinforcing their standing in Asian football.
