In a move to stabilize food prices and support agricultural trade, South Korea has prolonged its preferential tariff scheme for importing fruits from Taiwan. This extension will maintain reduced import duties on bananas, pineapples, and mangoes, lowering them from 30% to a mere 5% until August 15. Originally, this tariff relief, introduced earlier this year, was set to conclude at the end of June. However, it has now been extended to coincide with Taiwan’s significant mango export period.
The Taiwanese Ministry of Agriculture highlighted that this initiative is expected to bolster the country’s fruit exports and satisfy rising consumer demand within South Korea. Officials emphasized that the timeline of this extension is strategically favorable, aligning with Taiwan’s peak mango harvest season, while South Korea’s domestic mango production is yet to reach its full capacity.
To further enhance the export market, the ministry announced ongoing efforts to support Taiwanese mangoes through various initiatives. These include quality improvement programs, targeted promotional campaigns, and forging partnerships with retailers in international markets. Such measures aim to strengthen Taiwan’s position in the global fruit trade and ensure a steady flow of quality produce to foreign consumers.
This year, Taiwanese mango exports have demonstrated resilience, with South Korea remaining a pivotal destination for these fruits. The continued strong demand underscores the effectiveness of the tariff program and Taiwan’s commitment to maintaining robust trade relations with its key partners.
