The newly opened Shengji Tunnel in Taipei promises to significantly reduce travel time between Zhongxiao East Road and the National Biotechnology Research Park in Nangang District. This NT$1.878 billion infrastructure project aims to alleviate traffic congestion by improving the flow along Zhongxiao East Road Section 7 and Academia Road, while providing a faster route to Sijhih District in New Taipei City.
Stretching approximately 824 meters, with a 716-meter tunnel section, the Shengji Tunnel is expected to cut travel times during peak hours from 15-20 minutes to under 10 minutes between the research park and Nangang Station. This new route not only enhances connectivity but also serves as an alternative during emergencies such as flooding on Academia Road. The tunnel also includes dedicated pathways for pedestrians and cyclists, ensuring safe access for non-motorized traffic.
The National Biotechnology Research Park, which began operations in 2018, has been instrumental in spurring growth in the biomedical and biotechnology sectors in Nangang, attracting over 2,600 researchers and professionals. The improved accessibility provided by the Shengji Tunnel is expected to further facilitate this growth, making the area more attractive for scientific and technological development.
The introduction of the Shengji Tunnel represents a significant investment in Taipei’s infrastructure, aimed at enhancing urban mobility and supporting the city’s burgeoning biotech industry.
